New Zealand healthcare ranking drops again
Despite Labour's $4 billion a year extra in health spending, New Zealand has fallen yet again in the latest Commonwealth Fund ranking of health systems, says National’s Health spokesman, Tony Ryall.
"When the ‘highly respected’ Fund launched its first survey of five developed countries health systems in 2004, New Zealand ranked first.
“The next year New Zealand slipped to second. And in the latest report released overnight New Zealand is now ranked fourth.
"The latest report also raises a number of questions about the effectiveness of Labour Government policy in elective surgery, and primary health care.
“Labour’s ‘less for more’
health spending approach has seen hospital performance
plummet, with patients missing out on basic care.
“A more focused approach would see smart use of the private sector to make maximum use of resources, greater involvement of specialists in decision-making, a stronger role for GPs and family health teams, and actually holding highly paid hospital managers to account.”
