Greens welcome bold vision of carbon neutral capital
Wellington-based Green MP Sue Kedgley is rapt the Wellington City Council has accepted the challenge of becoming a carbon neutral city, and eagerly anticipates the strong focus on public transport and electrification this will inevitably bring.
"Councillors should be congratulated for reaching this far sighted decision. I hope the Green Party and other groups will be able to work alongside them towards what is an ambitious but achievable goal.
"Obviously the best way to reduce carbon emissions in Wellington is to increase the number of commuters travelling to and from the city by rail and public transport. It's therefore essential that upgrading and modernising our rail network should be the main focus for the region's transport strategy.
"Transforming our rundown suburban rail network into a modern commuter mass transit system, as well as investing in alternative energy sources such as wind will go a long way to bringing this aspiration to reality," Ms Kedgley says.
