Maori Party Commends call for Reduction in Hoki Quota
Tariana Turia, Fisheries Spokesperson for the Maori Party

The Maori Party has congratulated Sealord, Aotearoa Fisheries and Sanford for their ‘stand of strength’ today in promoting sustainability at the forefront of their activities in hoki fisheries.
“When we spoke at the first reading of the Fisheries Amendment Bill back in March, we, the Maori Party, gave emphasis to the need to maintain the potential of fisheries resources to meet the needs of future generations, and to preventing adverse effects of fishing on the aquatic environment” said Tariana Turia, Fisheries spokesperson for the Maori Party.
“The joint position of Sealord, Aotearoa Fisheries and Sanford in calling for a reduction in the Hoki Total Allowable Commercial Catch demonstrates their commitment towards sustainability, as well as the long term health of hoki fish stocks” said Mrs Turia.
“This is no doubt a decision which has caused them considerable angst, as we think of the commercial consequences of such a stand” said Mrs Turia.
“We fully support their actions in calling for a reduction in the hoki catch, to 80,000 tonnes (75% of the catch from the Easter stock; 25% from Western)” said Mrs Turia.
“The Maori Party acknowledges the foresight of the leadership from these three organisations, particularly Robin Hapi and Eric Barratt, and hope that the Minister of Fisheries will appreciate the initiative they have taken”.
