In what is a major milestone for Hastings, today marked the beginning of site clearance work on the site of the new Hastings Court, Courts Minister Rick Barker said today.

"The new courthouse, which will be three times bigger than its predecessor, will be built next to the existing courthouse on the corner of Eastbourne Street West and Market Street South.

"Once the Spurs Restaurant building, PARS building and Lightning Auto building are removed and demolished and the site is cleared, piling and construction will commence. Construction will take just over a year, and I expect the new courthouse to be completed by late 2008.

"In the nineties courthouses around the country were being threatened with closure. The Labour-led Government is committed to ensuring communities have access to justice and I'm delighted the new court is now one step closer," said Rick Barker.
