Families can fight climate change and save $1000
The average Kiwi family can help the country fight climate change and save as much as $1000 a year by following simple no cost and low cost energy efficiency and conservation measures at home and in the family car.
“Climate change
is an critical issue here in New Zealand, but we can all
take action to address this problem, and save money in the
process,” says, Charles Chauvel MP.
Chauvel continues
“there are several events coming up in the Wellington
region that will showcase ways in which Wellingtonians are
able to fight climate change on an individual level.”
By adopting some simple no cost and low cost energy savings actions the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority estimates families can knock around $600 of the energy bill for the family home and around $400 from the family car.
“The savings from these actions will more than cover the extra costs of paying for greenhouse gas pollution through small increases in fuel costs that happen in 2009 and electricity that happen in 2010 as a result of the decision to introduce an Emissions Trading Scheme,” said Chauvel
“It should also be remembered that the government is looking at ways to assist households as they adjust to higher electricity costs, whether that's through compensation for people on low or modest incomes, or assistance for energy efficiency measures such as insulation retrofits.:
Chauvel has suggested, from his own personal power saving efforts, that he has found the following a good way to keep the power bill down and help battle climate change:
- Use a timer on the heated towel rail
- Turn
appliances off instead of to standby
- Fit energy saving
lightbulbs
- Using cold water in the laundry,
- Set
your hot water tank to 60 degrees
- Fit a low flow
shower head and hot water cylinder wrap
