“It’s time to get serious about climate change”, says Charles Chauvel Wellington Labour List MP. “Here in Wellington we enjoy some of the most beautiful natural flora and fauna that New Zealand has to offer. The Hubbards Carbon Crusade is a great way to get all New Zealanders involved in protecting our environment for future generations.”
The Hubbards Carbon Crusade is a national series of off-road running and walking events. Each participant is supplied with bottled water and four fertiliser tablets. Participants will carry these items in their backpack to the planting area, about half-way round the 13-15km course. Waiting for them beside their pre-dug holes will be four native trees, ready for planting.
“I am looking forward to Hubbards Carbon Crusade:, says Chauvel. “The world-class views, scenery and camaraderie amongst fellow Carbon Crusaders will hopefully make this an annual event”, he continued.
The Wellington course is on Papanui Station, home to Boomrock Lodge, and includes some sealed road and gravel farm roads. A grunt of a hill takes you up to enjoy views from 200m high cliff faces with unobstructed views out west to Mana Island and beyond, and to the Marlborough Sounds to the south. The challenge takes place tomorrow, Saturday 6 October, at 9.30 am.
“So let’s get planting to give back to our environment and enrich its biodiversity. This is not going to solve the problem we face with climate change, but every step counts. Let’s think locally and take action as individuals, one step at a time,” says Chauvel.
“Papanui Station has to be seen to be believed, given that it’s only 19km by road from the Beehive. The serenity and scale of the station makes you feel like you’re a world away from anywhere,” says Chauvel.
