World Mental Health Day Timely Reminder

World Mental Health Day Timely Reminder

“Today is World Mental Health Day, and this week is Mental Health Awareness Week in New Zealand. It’s a timely reminder of the impact that mental illness has on the daily lives of individuals and families,” says National’s Associate Health (Mental Health) spokesman, Jonathan Coleman.

“I applaud the efforts of all those working in the sector.

“However, as highlighted by the data printed recently in The Lancet, which compares New Zealand’s mental health system to that of other nations, it is important that we not lose sight of just how far our country still has to go in this area.

“While we have made significant progress in areas such as destigmatisation, issues such as support for families, youth mental health, and especially access to mental health services have still not been properly addressed by the Labour Government after eight years in office.

“Pete Hodgson needs to lift his game in mental health, and start delivering much better results.”
