The Mapp Report - Dr Wayne Mapp
Clear Choice For Taxpayers
NZ vs
Australia
The gap between New Zealand and Australia has
just got wider. The Howard government has announced a
dramatic new tax package for the next three years.
Inevitably, the Australian Labor opposition will also have a
major tax package for voters to consider. You can be sure
no matter which party wins the election, Australian
taxpayers will get a major reduction in their taxes.
Broken promise
What a difference to New Zealand! The
government steadfastly refuses to give New Zealanders a tax
cut. They broke their promise of the 2005 budget, to
provide a tax cut in 2006. Even though it was only a small
tax cut (the ‘chewing gum’ budget), Labour still managed
to break its promise.
Gap gets larger
No wonder
the gap between Australia and New Zealand’s after tax
income has got much larger in the last eight years. David
Farrar of Kiwiblog has shown that incomes from 1999 to 2007
rose no greater than during 1990 to 1999. And after taking
inflation into account, real net average wages from 1999 to
2007 only went up by $33.70 from $633.21 to $665.33.
Unprecedented growth
Labour’s failure to adjust tax
thresholds for nearly a decade has meant average real
incomes are virtually no higher today than a decade ago.
And this has been during a period of unprecedented growth in
commodity prices, and tourist numbers.
Regular tax
reductions
Contrast the situation to Australia. Their
taxes have been reduced virtually every year over the last
decade by the Howard government. In particular, tax
thresholds have been increased to keep pace with inflation
and economic growth. That means the gap in after tax
incomes between the two countries has opened up. It was
around 25% a decade ago, and now it is closer to 33%.
Loss of talented people
New Zealanders know
this, and many are voting with their feet to cross the
Tasman. New Zealand needs to keep more of its talented
people. Reducing taxes is a crucial part of the mix.
Tax cuts for everyone
Under Labour, it is broken tax
promises. Under National, it will be tax cuts for
everyone.
