Maori Party awaits assessment of Guy Fawkes Celebrations
The day after Guy Fawkes always creates room for reflection about how the safety of our communities could be better managed” said Tariana Turia, Co-Leader of the Maori Party.
“The Maori Party is aware of the human costs of fireworks that are best measured by plastic surgeons, firefighters, police, hospitals and emergency units” said Mrs Turia.
“We are particularly mindful of the critical role that the Fire Service plays in maintaining safety in our communities, often at huge risk to themselves. It is one of the most efficient and well regarded services of so much importance to our communities”.
“We do, however, also appreciate the vital role that celebration has within our communities, and fireworks evenings are one such means of keeping community spirit alight” said Mrs Turia.“While at the same time, I think it is also important that we learn about the history of Guy Fawkes”.
“We await the expert advice of the Fire Service, along with Police, ERMA and the Ministry for the Environment, to guide us all in assessing the right balance between community safety and wellbeing and responsible use of fireworks” ended Mrs Turia.
