Corrections head office staff continue to leave

Staff at Corrections’ head office continue to leave at a worrying rate, says National’s Justice & Corrections spokesman, Simon Power.

“This is a symptom of a department in turmoil and it seems to be getting worse.”

He is releasing figures that show there was a turnover of 24.5% of head office staff in 2006/07, compared with just 21% the previous year.

“What is more surprising is that turnover at head office is far outstripping the turnover of front-line staff – the people who are face-to-face with prisoners every day.

“In the past year, only 9.7% of those front-line staff left.

“And the situation at head office is likely to get worse, with Corrections signalling in its 2006/07 Financial Review that the much-vaunted review of head office ‘may, in the short term, adversely affect turnover.’ "
