Ron Chippindale’s death a tragedy

Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven has paid tribute to Ron Chippindale, former chief air accident investigator who died tragically in Wellington this morning.

“Ron Chippindale was a man of principle who will be greatly missed by the transport safety and aviation communities,” said Mr Duynhoven.

“While Ron Chippindale left an indelible mark on the investigation into the 1979 Erebus disaster, he also made an enormous contribution to the standards of aviation safety in New Zealand.

“Ron Chippindale was a dedicated professional who was held in very high regard by his peers. This was demonstrated in 2004 when he was presented with a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to aviation accident investigation by the International Society of Air Safety Investigators.

“This is a tragic end to a fine career of a man whose work undoubtedly helped save many lives,” said Mr Duynhoven.
