Council shelving of Raumati station makes no sense - Greens

The sidelining of plans for a railway station at Raumati South abandons commuters to their cars, the Green Party says.

"Shelving promised new railway stations at Raumati South and Lindale breaks a promise the Regional Council made to local residents, and makes absolutely no sense," Green's Wellington Transport Spokesperson Sue Kedgley says.

"On the one hand Greater Wellington Regional Council is saying it is committed to supporting sustainable public transport and yet with the other it is putting up blocks for commuters.

"Only 8 percent of Raumati residents take the train to work, and shelving plans for a railway station for them will do nothing to encourage them to get out of their cars, or to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

"It is imperative that the Kapiti rail line is electrified and double-tracked to Waikanae, but this should happen in tandem with the new railway stations, not instead of."
