ACT: Dump The ETS

ACT: Dump The ETS

Rodney Hide MP
Thursday, May 1 2008

ACT Leader Rodney Hide today congratulated the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research for quantifying the costs of the Labour-led Government's Emissions Trading Scheme.

"The Government has resolutely refused to tell us the cost to New Zealand of its scheme," Mr Hide said.

"The NZIER estimates that the ETS will depress household spending by $3,000 per household, drop wages by $2.30 an hour and knock $6 billion off GDP.

"The benefits of the scheme are nil - whether or not New Zealand adopts the ETS will have no effect on the world's weather.

"The Government's ETS is a crock and should be dumped," Mr Hide said.
