Deputy Clerk of the House of Representatives

Debra Angus, Clerk-Assistant (Legal Services) in the Office of the Clerk, has been appointed Deputy Clerk of the House of Representatives.

While the appointment is effective immediately, Ms Angus will formally take up her new role on 9 June 2008.

Ms Angus, LLB, was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 1982.

Prior to joining the Office of the Clerk, Ms Angus worked in a number of public sector legal roles and as a Crown Counsel in the Crown Law Office.

She joined the Office of the Clerk as Legislative Counsel in 1996 and was appointed the inaugural Clerk-Assistant (Legal Services) in 2006. In that role Ms Angus was responsible for the recruitment of staff for the newly established Legal Services Office and the management of the delivery of legal services to the Office of the Clerk and the Parliamentary Service.

Ms Angus brings to the position an extensive knowledge of parliamentary administration and funding, as well as parliamentary law and procedure.

Ms Angus’ appointment follows the appointment of former Deputy Clerk Mary Harris to the position of Clerk of the House of Representatives.
