Safe driving this Queen’s Birthday weekend

Motorists heading away for the long weekend are urged to take extra care on the roads, Transport Safety Minister Harry Duynhoven said today.

“Many people will be travelling on the roads, especially at the beginning and end of the weekend and, as always, drivers need to be vigilant.

“Particularly as winter approaches, people need to drive to the conditions and be aware of the dangers of driver distraction and driver fatigue.

“Take regular breaks if you are driving long distances and make sure you are not risking falling asleep at the wheel by being too tired. Look out for ‘Driver Reviver’ stops and take advantage of these,” Mr Duynhoven said.

“Drivers also need to be aware of the dangers of driver distraction – this can be anything from eating or drinking in the car, changing a CD or being distracted by advertising billboards or scenery. They should also turn cellphones off.”

The official Queen’s Birthday weekend period runs from 4.00pm today (Friday 30 May) until 6am on Tuesday, June 3.

Last Queen’s Birthday weekend five people died on New Zealand roads and 188 were injured.

“Keeping the road toll down is eveyone’s responsibility ,” Mr Duynhoven said.

“I want to see the lowest road toll yet, so stay alert, drive to the conditions and have a safe and enjoyable weekend.”
