Heather Roy MP
Friday, June 6 2008

The deepening financial crisis at Capital & Coast District Health Board is impacting severely on the provision of health services for Wellington patients, ACT New Zealand Health Spokesman and Wellington-based MP Heather Roy said today.

"Anaesthetist and nursing shortages, combined with a lack of beds, at Wellington Hospital means that surgery is constantly being cancelled - with staff and patients alike frustrated at the lack of care available," Mrs Roy said.

"Patients would be better served through a hospital run by the doctors, nurses and other health professionals. CCDHB's funding could then be divided up and given to every person in the form of a health insurance policy - there would be more surety of care if this were the way Wellington's health services were run.

"Health Minister David Cunliffe sacked the Hawkes Bay DHB for supposed insubordination, yet he's happy to tolerate a deepening financial crisis and constant cuts to care for the people of Wellington," Mrs Roy said.
