Questions need answering in chilling incident of violent crime

The National Party is extremely concerned at the tragic killing of a shop owner in South Auckland at the weekend, says National’s Justice spokesman, Simon Power.

“There’s something very chilling when armed people can walk into a business and shoot the owner even after their demands for cash and goods seem to have been met.

“It’s very clear from incidents like this that New Zealand is losing the battle with violent crime.

“The callousness of Navtej Singh’s killing, after he had complied with the offenders' requests, reflects the fact that New Zealand has become a more violent society.

“In recent years, violent crime, including violent crime by youths, has risen to worrying levels.

“Questions over emergency service response times to the shooting have been raised in media reports, and it is vitally important we get some answers.

“Public confidence in our emergency services must be maintained.

“People need to know that when they make an emergency call, the quickest possible response is forthcoming.

“This chilling tragedy reminds us, as a country, that much work needs to be done if we are to tackle violent crime.

“All New Zealanders’ thoughts will be with Mr Singh’s family at this time.”
