More Parties Follow ACT's Lead To Oppose ETS

Rodney Hide MP
Wednesday June 18 2008

ACT Leader Rodney Hide today welcomed news that both the Maori Party and United Future will oppose the Labour Government's proposed Emissions Trading Bill, and called on the Greens and New Zealand First to do the same.

"Labour's ETS isn't worth the paper it's written on - it will do nothing to reduce carbon emission levels, but will impose a raft of increased costs on those who can least afford it," Mr Hide said.

"The Maori Party is absolutely correct in its view that the ETS is 'fundamentally flawed'. This legislation is completely unworkable and should be scrapped altogether - not recycled.

"If New Zealand First and the Greens were truly serious about helping New Zealanders and sustaining the environment, they would join with ACT and the other Parties in opposing this defective and superfluous Bill immediately.

"Act is the only Party that has opposed the ETS since its introduction. Since then, support for this Bill has steadily eroded. It's time Labour admitted defeat and withdrew this piece of unsustainable legislation altogether," Mr Hide said.
