Dismay at Steve Fitzgerald’s death

The National Party’s law and order spokesmen are dismayed at the death of long-serving top policeman Superintendant Steve Fitzgerald in a traffic accident in Lower Hutt last night.

Justice & Corrections spokesman, Simon Power, says Mr Fitzgerald was an outstanding police officer who was respected for his work, both as New Zealand’s top traffic officer and latterly as head of the 111 communications system.

“He was seen around Parliament regularly, particularly by MPs working on law and order, and his openness and genuine approach will be missed.”

Mr Borrows said Mr Fitzgerald was an outstanding professional who was committed to making a difference.

“He is largely attributed with introducing initiatives that helped dramatically cut our road toll – and that was no mean feat.”

“As a former policeman myself, I applaud his work.

”The National Party’s thoughts are with Mr Fitzgerald’s family at this time.”
