Appointment to the Accounting Standards Review Board

Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel today announced the appointment of Ralph Simpson as a new member of the Accounting Standards Review Board (ASRB) for a five-year term.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ralph Simpson as a new member of the ASRB,” said Minister Dalziel. “His legal expertise will be particularly useful on the board as legal issues relating to the scope of the ASRB’s powers arise from time to time.”

Ralph Simpson has been a partner at Bell Gully since 1992. He specialises in commercial, corporate and securities litigation. He is a past member of the Bell Gully Management Board and past member of the Joint Insolvency Committee, which is composed of representatives from the legal and accounting professional bodies. In addition to his legal qualification, he holds a Commerce degree, with a major in Accounting.

Background on the Accounting Standards Review Board (ASRB)
The Accounting Standards Review Board is an independent Crown entity established under the Financial Reporting Act 1993 and operating within the framework of the Crown Entities Act 2004. Its primary functions are to set the strategy for financial reporting in New Zealand; review and approve financial reporting standards; and encourage the development of financial reporting standards, including standards for different classes of reporting entities. The ASRB also seeks to influence the development of international standards and has close linkages with Australian standards bodies.

The Board consists of not less than four and not more than seven members appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minister of Commerce.
