Environment centres to receive additional funding

Environment centres around the country are about to receive a share of $200,000 extra annual funding, says Environment Minister Trevor Mallard.

“The centres play a crucial role for their communities, providing a place where people can walk in the door and get practical advice on everything from making their homes more energy efficient to how they can cut down on their water use,” Trevor Mallard said.

Since 2000/01, the $300,000-a-year Environment Centre Fund has been available on a contestable basis to assist environment centres with operational costs.

The extra funding announced today will be available for each of the next four years.

“The Government is aware of the great job environment centres throughout the country have been doing in their communities,” Trevor Mallard said.

“This extra funding recognises our commitment to supporting that work.”

The money will enable centres to increase their capacity to engage with the community on a wide range of environmental issues as well as carry out specific regional projects that facilitate environmental action in the community.

Trevor Mallard says an amount up to a maximum of just over $18,000 a year will be available to centres within 11 regions.

“I am pleased to be able to offer further financial support for the significant work environment centres around the country undertake,” Trevor Mallard said.
