Housing NZ Appeal Supported - Paraone

New Zealand First welcomes Housing New Zealand’s decision to appeal a previous Tenancy Tribunal decision which allowed an antisocial Auckland family to remain in their state house, says housing spokesperson Pita Paraone.

“Housing New Zealand has made the right decision to appeal in the so-called Rangeview Road case, despite its bungling of the original hearing” said Mr Paraone.

“With around 10,000 vulnerable and needy people currently on its waiting list, Housing New Zealand must take a zero-tolerance approach with tenants who abuse the privilege of living in a state house. Any who do so must be kicked out.

“State house tenants have to learn that there are rules and regulations in their tenancy contracts, and that includes being neighbourly. In this case, Housing New Zealand has a commitment to safeguard their other tenants who live on the street.

“If Housing New Zealand succeeds, then this case is certainly a good step towards addressing some of the imbalance in rights that currently exists between a landlord and tenant,” said Mr Paraone.
