Playcentres being ‘systematically under-funded’

The next Government must increase funding for playcentres to give support that is equitable to the 20 free hours policy, says UnitedFuture deputy leader Judy Turner.

“Playcentres play a vital role in the early childhood sector, but are not being given the support they deserve,” says Mrs Turner.

“The 20 free hours policy is a good initiative, but it excludes parent-led centres. Playcentres should receive equitable funding to enable them to continue offering the service to parents and children in the community.

“Playcentres appear to be undervalued by the Government. They support parents as well as children, yet they are faced with an escalating administrative burden and increasing costs, while being excluded from the 20 free hours policy.

“Playcentres in New Zealand are systematically under-funded. They need and deserve better support,” says Mrs Turner.

“Playcentres should receive equitable funding to those who receive 20 hours free – although a different funding mechanism is needed. But the bottom-line is that Playcentres need and deserve more assistance.

“UnitedFuture supports the report by the Playcentre Federation released today and is pushing for increased support to better reflect the actual costs of doing business for the Playcentre sector, while providing equitable funding with those enjoying the 20 free hours policy,” says Mrs Turner.
