National Only Gets Half The Job Done In Eldercare

National Party Only Gets Half The Job Done In Eldercare

New Zealand First is pleased that National has now at least recognised the eldercare sector, but its policy simply does not go far enough, says Winston Peters.

“We will hold any future government to the promise of increased funding for nurses in this sector and respite care. The simple fact is that until nurses in the eldercare sector are paid at the same level of DHB nurses then retention will never be resolved.

“But that is only half the equation. The sector as a whole must be placed on a secure funding pathway – and one that extended well past a three year election cycle.

“The means not just ensuring that the sector receives annual CPI adjustments, with a clear mechanism for ensuring DHBs pass all the money on, but that a thorough review of the demands of an ageing population is undertaken so that proper planning can occur.

“Only this will ensure that the large scale capital spending which will be needed to house an aging population, and the associated costs, is based on sound research.

“An independent training organisation must also be established to address the specific demands of this sector.

“These wider promises were part of New Zealand First’s ongoing commitment to this sector. Put simply we are prepared to fund this sector to ensure that our seniors get the care they need – when they need it. As usual National has turned up to a gun fight with a bow and arrow when it comes to our seniors,” concluded Mr Peters.
