Celebrating international day for disabled people

Labour Party spokesperson for Disability for Issues Lynne Pillay, acknowledged both the struggles and gains made over the past year on this the International Day for Disabled people.

This year saw New Zealand ratified the United Nations Convention on the rights of Disabled people.

“New Zealand has been given much of the credit for leading that development,” Mrs Pillay said.

In 2008 New Zealand was unanimously voted the winner of the Franklin D Roosevelt Award. This award is given to the United Nations state judged to be leading disability issues.

“It has been a year of achievement and a year of celebration.”

“I congratulate disabled people on this, the International Day of recognition for their achievements and I look forward to working with disabled people to address future challenges.”
