Cuts to Public Service not a
plan
Blithely cutting the Public Service will do
nothing to help the economy and could hurt New Zealanders
who turn to government agencies for help during the
recession, Labour Party State Services spokesperson Grant
Robertson says.
Mr Robertson said the Public Service always needed to be efficient and effective but arbitrarily cutting personnel numbers would not achieve this.
“It is concerning that we have calls to cut the Public Service without any details on how government agencies would continue to deliver essential services to the New Zealand public.
“A stable Public Service is what is needed at a time of great uncertainty in the economy.”
“It’s ironic that Mr Key would call for a jobs summit, when he is clearly happy for Public Servants who contribute to the economy to lose their jobs.
“The Government should be working with all sectors, including the Public Service, to develop a plan for helping New Zealand through these tough economic times.
“It’s clear the National Government is big on rhetoric but short on well thought through ideas that will actually benefit the country,” Mr Robertson said
