Labour : Don’t forget the workers on May Day

Labour MPs are urging the community to take a moment to remember the contribution of New Zealand workers on International Workers Day today (May Day).

Labour spokesperson, Trevor Mallard says that this year’s celebrations come at a time at a time when job insecurity is at unprecedented levels, when many workers have lost their jobs, or have experienced cuts to hours or pay.

“While it might feel like there is not a lot to celebrate in the worst economic conditions experienced in decades, we must remember the real gains workers and their unions have made over many years,” he says.

“On May Day, we acknowledge the significant contributions of workers and unions in improving the lives of New Zealanders.”

Associate Labour spokesperson Darien Fenton says while that May Day is an important day to remember the gains, it’s also a day to remember that there is still a lot to be done.

“For example, many workers are not entitled to redundancy pay and are being dumped from their jobs without compensation,” says Ms Fenton.

“Labour was ready to introduce minimum redundancy entitlements, but the National Government has shelved the recommendations made by an advisory group that recommended redundancy rights for all workers last year.”

And Carol Beaumont, Associate Labour spokesperson urges the Government to act decisively to protect and create jobs, invest significantly in upskilling workers to strengthen their employability and job security and ensure that the economic crisis is not used as an excuse to attack workers rights.

“Now, more than ever, there is a need to recognise the contribution of workers to our communities and the New Zealand economy. We must focus on investing in people and improving our workplaces for our mutual benefit,'” says Ms Beaumont.
