Labour Congratulates Customs and Police on Drugs Haul

Labour’s Custom Spokesperson Su’a William Sio congratulates NZ Customs Service and the NZ Police following the successful interception of a 77 kilogram powder concealment of Contact NT, an ingredient destined for the production of methamphetamine or P, Labour Customs spokesperson Su’a William Sio says.

Two men have since been arrested in a joint Customs and Police operations with one of the accused facing charges of importing and conspiracy to supply. We understand the other accused is charged with possession for supply of class C controlled drugs.

“Given the challenges and dangers facing our communities with illicit drugs, New Zealanders will be deeply appreciative of Custom and Police efforts to protect our people from the illicit drug trade and all the devastation and harm it brings,” says Su’a William Sio.

NZ Customs estimate that the seizure avoided $3 to 4.5 million worth of harm to the community by criminals pursuing a trade driven by greed and feeding of the misery of New Zealanders.

“Great work indeed by NZ Customs and NZ Police and we can’t thank them enough for preventing this consignment from reaching New Zealand’s streets,” says Su’a William Sio.

“The effects of the illicit drug trade on our entire communities and our families, not to mention frontline officers who serve valiantly in harm’s way, would have been lethal, to say the least.”

Su’a William Sio says I am hopeful that the Minister of Customs will ensure that in his Government’s upcoming budget that the efforts of the NZ Customs staff are strengthened with more support & resources.

“I hope Mr Williamson isn’t cutting staff numbers in Customs as his government has done in other Government departments because if we don’t have the sufficient numbers of frontline staff at Customs, with the necessary support & resources these staff need, it is likely that other illegal hauls will slip through.”

“That’s not good for New Zealand, and definitely not good for our local communities who don’t want the illegal drug trade in their neighbourhoods.”
