Goff pays tribute to a worthy leader
Labour Leader Phil Goff today paid tribute the vision and leadership of Jeanette Fitzsimons and congratulated Metiria Turei on her selection has the Green Party's new Co-leader.
“I think all Kiwis who have concerns about the environment will acknowledge the role Jeannette has played in helping these concerns enter the consciousness of mainstream New Zealand.
“While we may not have agreed on a number of areas of policy, I have never doubted her commitment to New Zealand and to the people who voted for the Green Party. It is that commitment that helped the Green Party to become a lasting force in politics.
“Under her Co-leadership the Greens continued to thrive as a party even after the sad and untimely death of Co-leader Rod Donald, Jeanette steered her party through that devastating loss, never veering from what she stood for.
“Jeanette will be a hard act to follow. Her legacy as Co-leader is one of a smart, principled, friendly and dedicated politician who has always remained committed to her policies and to advocating for a better New Zealand.
“New Zealand politics has been richer for her input. I am sure that as an MP New Zealand will continue to hear from her.
“To the new Co-leader Metiria Turei I look forward to working constructively with you,” Phil Goff said.
