Rotorua MP welcomes Kawerau Mill consent -
Condemns Green MP as interfering.
Rotorua MP Todd McClay has welcomed the granting of a resource consent for the Kawerau Mill and said that this announcement was great news for the town of Kawerau.
He said that Environment Bay of Plenty’s decision to grant a consent to cover the next 25 years will mean that the door is now open for a large scale investment and redevelopment of this complex by the mill owners. "Kawerau and this Mill now has a more certain future" he said.
Mr McClay said that the Mill had a very proud history in Kawerau. “Carter Holt Harvey and Norske Skog Tasman must be commended for the hard work they have put in to balance environmental concerns with the interests of keeping jobs and employment. Their commitment to Kawerau needs to be recognised” Todd McClay said.
Mr McClay who is to visit Kawerau on Friday 15 October also criticised Green Party Thames List MP Catherine Delahunty for her narrow sighted view of the Kawerau Mill and the impact any further delay in granting a consent could have on the town of Kawerau. Mr McClay said that Mrs Delahunty had seemed unwilling to look at all the facts putting unproven environmental ideology and speculation before jobs in the Bay of Plenty.
“Thank goodness that EBOP have kept a level head and done proper due diligence on this consent. Mrs Delahunty’s interference has been unhelpful” Mr McClay said.
