Maori given cold shoulder under ‘moderated’ ETS

The so called ‘moderated’ ETS gives billions in free subsidies to foreign-owned industries, while limiting the allocation given to Maori owned interests, the Green Party said today.

“The proposal that any industry be given a blank cheque by the Government is ridiculous. It is telling when one examines who has been offered a blank cheque and who hasn’t,” said Green Party Co-Leader Metiria Turei.

“Forestry and fishing interests will get a fixed allocation for a fixed amount of time, while other industries will get an unlimited subsidy for an unlimited time.

“I am staggered that the Maori Party could support legislation that treats Maori interests so callously.

“The Green Party opposes unlimited subsidies being given to anyone because of the risk this poses to taxpayers and the Government accounts. It is equally disturbed by the disdain this Government has shown for the interests of tangata whenua.

“Minister Smith needs to explain why his proposed legislation is both morally bankrupt and economically reckless,” Ms Turei said.
