Te Tai Tonga MP dissapointed with school closure
Rahui Katene, Maori Party MP for Te Tai Tonga, today expressed her disappointment with the decision of Minister of Education Anne Tolley to close Aorangi Primary School in Christchurch.
"Mrs Tolley has presided over a flawed process and to add insult to injury the Board found out about her decision through the media rather than from the Minister".
Mrs Katene said that throughout the consultation process the community had made it clear it did not want to lose its school.
"Aorangi School is the only school in the whole north east of Christchurch with a bilingual unit. No other community has put up its hand to take on this unit. What does the Minister think is going to happen to those children now?"
"I want to acknowledge the determination of a dedicated group of parents and the wider school community to keep the school open" said Mrs Katene. "The Maori Party has tried to impress upon the Minister the significant community support enjoyed by Aorangi - a call which we know other local MPs have also taken up".
"It is
a great disappointment to us all that such widespread
community support seems to count for
nought"
