Pansy Wong should front up to taxpayers

16 November 2010 Media Statement
Pansy Wong should front up to taxpayers

Labour Leader Phil Goff is calling on Pansy Wong to come out of hiding and explain why she misused taxpayers’ money to further her husband’s business interests overseas.

“It is wrong for the Prime Minister to advise Pansy Wong to avoid answering questions. She is a National MP and he is responsible for her. John Key should tell her to front up to the public.

“The Prime Minister’s handling of this issue has been appalling. When questions about Pansy Wong’s behaviour were first raised, John Key and his staff hurled personal abuse at the Opposition. Now he claims he’s not responsible for her and has even told her not to answer questions about her actions.

“It’s time John Key showed leadership on this issue instead of trying to excuse his MPs behaviour by suggesting the rules around the international travel entitlement aren’t clear. The rules are crystal clear – the travel perk should not be used for private commercial business. Pansy Wong knew that. She broke the rules. It is that simple.”

Labour says the international travel entitlement should be reviewed by the Remuneration Authority, which is independent and able to make recommendations about any changes. Labour will abide by those recommendations.
