Debate highlights alcohol
irony
A debate taking place in
Christchurch on 23 December highlights the irony that
alcohol is sold in supermarkets in the same way as milk and
bread despite the impact of the modern drinking culture on
the Kiwi way of life, says Christchurch East MP Lianne
Dalziel.
Lianne Dalziel will lead one of the teams in the debate which is being sponsored by Community Action on Youth and Drugs (CAYAD). The other team is led by Sergeant Al Lawn of the Police Alcohol Strategy and Enforcement Team.
“ I will be arguing that alcohol is an everyday commodity – it must be when I can buy it along with all my other groceries . The debate will be fun as well as challenging,” Lianne Dalziel said.
“The Law Commission’s report into alcohol has offered a once-in-a-generation chance to curb alcohol-related harm. National is squandering this opportunity, but I hope this debate will spark submissions from the Christchurch community that will help force the government to strengthen its response to the report.”
Lianne Dalziel said the select committee hearing submissions on the Alcohol Law Reform Bill would accept submissions until 18 February next year.
“It is appropriate that CAYAD, which works to reduce the harm from drugs, including alcohol, to all young people is sponsoring this debate,” Lianne Dalziel said.
