Kaitoko Whanau workers honoured in Christchurch Earthquake Awards Ceremony

The Minister of Maori Affairs, Hon. Dr. Pita Sharples is ecstatic that Kaitoko Whanau workers have been honoured in the Christchurch Civic Awards for the work they have done over the last year to support whanau affected by the Christchurch earthquakes.

Hon. Dr. Pita Sharples said “It is wonderful that we are able to celebrate the work of community organisations on the one year anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake. There was outstanding leadership shown by all the recipient organisations during the earthquake recovery process, and I am pleased that they have been formally recognised for their hard work."

"I recall the efforts of organisations such as Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, who after the earthquake provided much leadership in bringing Iwi, and Maori organisations together alongside Te Puni Kokiri."

“I am particular pleased that there has been formal recognition of the work undertaken by He Oranga Pounamu through their Ru Whenua Kaitoko Whanau Programme.”

“During the period following the 22nd of February quake last year, Te Puni Kokiri put some resource into He Oranga Pounamu, to establish 15 Kaitoko Whanau positions (whanau advocates), to reach out and support whanau to access the assistance they needed at the time. ” Sharples said.

“Tonight both He Oranga Pounamu, and Te Runanga o Nga Maata Waka, who also has a Kaitoko Whanau service, have received awards for leadership following the Christchurch earthquake. It is a fitting honour for those who have worked so hard, and indeed those who were at the coalface during our nations time of crisis.”

Hon. Dr. Sharples said “This Kaitoko Whanau programme, which has been up and running since 2009, has placed many advocates in communities right across Aotearoa, and I am constantly hearing stories of the wonderful work they are doing with whanau.”

“I am very proud of the work they have done, and I congratulate them alongside all community organisations honoured tonight. I am also proud of Te Puni Kokiri for administering this programme.”
