Māori Party welcomes report on Foreign Charter Vessels
Te Ururoa Flavell, Maori Party MP for Waiariki has welcomed the findings of the Ministerial Inquiry on Foreign Charter Vessels (FCVs) released today by Ministers Carter and Wilkinson.
“The Maori Party took a hard line on this issue, and we are pleased with the findings of the report, and the commitment made in principle by Ministers to act on the first six recommendations in the report,” said Mr Flavell.
“In October 2011 Rahui Katene made a submission to the Inquiry on behalf of the Maori Party, which outlined a number of recommendations including that FCVs be held to the highest international human rights standard. It is great to see such progress has been made.
“We feel that the recommendations contained within this report, such as requiring that a New Zealand observer be placed on all FCVs; that crew wages be paid into New Zealand bank accounts; and that all crews and operators are proactively informed of their rights and responsibilities, are a huge leap towards ensuring we honour the human rights of these workers,” ends Mr Flavell.
