Green Party comment on the National War Memorial Park

The Green Party supports the National War Memorial Park with reservations over the cost of the new tunnel and the process around it, Green Party transport spokesperson Julie Anne Genter said today.

“The National War Memorial Park will be an appropriate way to mark the centenary of Gallipoli and add a valuable green space to Wellington’s CBD,” said Ms Genter.

“The $75 million price-tag for undergrounding the existing road is very high. The Greens are also concerned about the overriding powers the Government is planning to give itself in the Memorial Park Enabling Act.

“The high cost and the emergency powers are the result of the Government leaving this important work to the last minute, after previously cancelling the project in 2009.

“The Green Party continues to oppose the neighbouring Basin Reserve Flyover that would be expensive, unsightly, and would worsen Wellington's traffic," said Ms Genter.
