Marriage equality takes a step forward

Tonight is an historic moment for New Zealanders and a step toward the legal recognition that loving couples, regardless of their sex, sexual orientation or gender identity, should be able to marry, says Labour MP Louisa Wall.

The fight for all New Zealanders to be recognised as equal citizens under the law has won its first round in Parliament tonight with the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill passing its first reading 78 votes to 40.

“I want to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to all of my Parliamentary colleagues who supported the bill this evening, and for their passionate engagement with this cause,” Louisa Wall said.

“Tonight’s progress is a collective effort. I want to recognise Jools Joslin and Jenny Rowan who were litigants in the Quilter case that ultimately brought this issue to Parliament and everyone who got behind the campaign for marriage equality.

“I look forward to continuing the debate with all New Zealanders at the select committee,” Louisa Wall said.
