Social Services Committee initiates inquiry into sexual violence services

Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, Chair of the Social Services Committee, has welcomed the news that the Committee will establish an inquiry to look in to the services provided by the Government to victims of sexual violence.

“Currently funding is split between ACC, MSD, Justice and Health. The inquiry will consider ways to improve results through better coordination and a collaborative view on how an individual Government agency funding decision impacts the sector as a whole.” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.

“It will also review the consistency, availability of service delivery and administration costs for Government and the sector.”

The terms of reference for the inquiry will be as follows:

·         To review the current state of specialist services by looking at an integrated approach of service delivery, coverage and best practice.

·         To review current specialist services provided for Maōri and other diverse ethnic communities that are accessible and culturally appropriate and sustainable.
“A select committee inquiry will give us the opportunity to develop an evidence-based, best-practice, way forward for the appropriate provision of services. It will allow us to develop a New Zealand strategy for responding to sexual violence and a funding model that enables that to occur.” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.

“I look forward to hearing from the sector, community leaders and New Zealanders at large about how we can better support victims of sexual violence in our communities.”
