Super Ministry is no Minister’s Responsibility

Super Ministry is no Minister’s Responsibility

“The Government’s so-called ‘super ministry’, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MoBIE), looks like the blind leading the blind” says Labour Associate spokesperson for Building and Construction Raymond Huo.

According to its website, Building Amendment Bill (No 3) is still awaiting its second reading, when in fact it was passed in March last year.

“ It’s no wonder the consumers and the industry have no idea where they stand with regard to building law in this country. Stakeholders in the legal and construction industries that I have spoken to say it’s very difficult to get a clear picture of exactly where the law stands” says Raymond Huo.

“This glitch that has been brought to our attention begs the question of what other misinformation Kiwis have been accessing from the so-called ‘super ministry’s’ website”.

“The Building Act Review was initiated by the last Labour government and has won cross party support. Five years on, the Minister is still at sea without getting anything substantial done.

“As pointed out in submissions by some of New Zealand’s largest territorial authorities including Wellington and Christchurch city councils, amendments to Building Act need to be integrated, rather than the piecemeal approach we have consistently accused the Government of taking.

“Uncertainty around accountability and compliance leaves many contracts in limbo and doesn’t offer the protections needed around the building of homes. We must ensure we don’t allow another repeat of the man-made leaky building saga.”

“Consumers, builders and consenting authorities all need certainty about their responsibilities and protections. We must get this right ahead of New Zealand’s next construction boom.”
