Own Up To True State Of Economy Mr Key

The Government is turning a blind eye to the continuing stream of job losses as it talks up the economy, says New Zealand First.

Goodman Fielder has announced it will close its Hamilton meat processing plant with the loss of up to 125 jobs, says spokesperson for Labour and Industrial Relations, Barbara Stewart.

“Prime Minister John Key told Parliament two weeks ago that the Government’s policy focus is on areas that will help businesses invest, grow and create more jobs.”

He also made claims of economic growth, job creation and higher incomes, says Mrs Stewart.

“Perhaps Mr Key would like to repeat those words face to face with the people of Hamilton, where there is high unemployment. He has some explaining to do.

“There are 147,000 people out of work in New Zealand who are all being bypassed by this so-called rock-star economy. It does not add up. It is time for the Government to be honest.

“For the Prime Minister to suggest that the economy is heading in the right direction rubs salt into the wounds of these workers and their families.

“Jobs losses cause suffering right across a community. Families tighten spending, local businesses suffer and kids and their schools are affected.

“In 2012 there was a long list of job losses around the country and last year was little better. This year is off to a gloomy start for the 125 Goodman Fielder workers who have lost their jobs,” says Mrs Stewart.
