TVNZ’s silence speaks volumes

TVNZ’s refusal to answer specific questions in relation to Paora Maxwell’s employment at the state broadcaster speaks volumes over his suitability to lead Māori Television, Labour’s Broadcasting spokesperson Kris Faafoi said today

“We put specific questions to Chief Executive Kevin Kenrick about Mr Maxwell’s time at TVNZ and his subsequent, and somewhat controversial, departure.

“TVNZ responded with a no comment. Tellingly it was not backed up with even one word of support for Mr Maxwell.

“Paora Maxwell held a senior position at TVNZ before he left in February in 2013. We understand his departure involved a confidential agreement.

“TVNZ’s refusal to respond to these questions is disappointing for a number of reasons. If it holds opinions on the suitability for someone in a senior public broadcasting role, it should show leadership and at least pass that information on to those making the appointment.

“That way a fully informed appointment can be made.

“Labour believes in the fundamental integrity and independence of public broadcasting, but in this case questions must be asked about how transparent the appointment process has been.

“TVNZ might say it does not comment on employment matters relating to former employees, but this is about more than that. This is about maintaining the strength and integrity that Māori TV has built up over 10 years,” Kris Faafoi said.
