Labour to support development contributions Bill

Labour to support development contributions Bill

Labour will back a Bill to reduce development contributions levied to fund infrastructure for new housing developments, Labour's Housing spokesperson Phil Twyford says.

“With Labour’s support, the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill can pass before the Parliament rises for the election campaign.

“The Prime Minister incorrectly claimed that the Government didn't have the numbers to pass this Bill.

“We are willing to rescue the Government from its own incompetence. National has been talking about development contributions for six years now. If it doesn’t pass this Bill now, all that talk will have meant nothing.

“I can't imagine why John Key said he didn't have a majority for this legislation. Labour voted for it at first and second readings.

“Although we have reservations about this Bill, we are willing to support it.

“In the middle of a housing crisis, every possible effort must be made to reduce housing costs,” Phil Twyford says.
