Creating an inclusive society for disabled people

Creating an inclusive society for disabled people

A Labour Government will provide free annual health checks for people with an intellectual disability, Labour’s Disability Issues spokesperson Ruth Dyson said today in announcing Labour’s Disability Issues policy.

“We will also employ another 100 additional special education teachers and we will review the entire system of special needs support.

“Labour is committed to the principle in terms of disability that there is ‘ nothing about us without us’. To reinforce this we will immediately ensure the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

“We are also determined to support quality living for disabled people in the community. To that end we will make sure that more houses are designed to meet the needs of all New Zealanders.

“Labour accepts that there is still a long way to before all disabled people are living in a fully inclusive society but our policy will also ensure there will be consultation in partnership around areas of policy shortfalls and inadequacy.

“Our Disability Issues policy will dovetail into our Careplus programme which promises people with long term health problems will get free GP visits.”
