New Zealand Still on Course for Aged-Care Crisis
New Zealand remains on course for an aged-care funding crisis with the government avoiding the issue in Budget 2015, says New Zealand First.
“The
government is void of any future proofing ideas for the aged
care system with New Zealand’s $260 million yearly
shortfall in healthcare funding set to continue,” says New
Zealand First Spokesperson for Health Barbara
Stewart.
“New Zealand’s over-65 population is set to
double to 1.2 million people in 20 years.
“The aged care workforce is in desperate need of investment to attract qualified staff yet the National government is resolute in its inaction on the looming crisis.
“The lack of critical investment will lead to staffing shortages, longer waiting lists for aged related operations and fewer services as DHB’s struggle to cope.
“This year’s Budget shows just how out of touch this government really is, as funding remains insufficient for a healthy, sustainable aged-care service,” says Mrs Stewart.
