Minister Shows Total Disregard for
Petition
The Minister of Conservation Maggie Barry
plans to ignore a petition brought to Parliament today
calling for an immediate stop to Shark Cage Diving near
Stewart Island.
“The Minister had the audacity to call New Zealand First ignorant but not taking 768 New Zealanders seriously is the height of ignorance,” says Spokesperson for Labour and Industrial Relations Clayton Mitchell.
“When New Zealand First raised the welfare of these sharks with the Minister she trivialised the matter, claiming there had been no identifiable injuries from shark cages.
“However her own officials, DOC observers, have reported fresh cage wounds on sharks and this is supported by locals.
“We are disappointed in the Minister’s reaction to the petition, the evidence that there are problems and the fact she is hiding behind nasty attacks.
“New Zealand First wants a moratorium on shark diving off Stewart Island until new research is done on potential dangers to all segments of the community.”
