New science research programmes a $14.1m boost for Hutt Valley

The Hutt Valley is in line to receive a $14.1 million boost in science and research programme funding over the next four years. The funding has been allocated through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s 2015 science investment round.

National Party List MP based in the Hutt Valley, Chris Bishop, says this funding will provide a boost for the technology and science sector in the Hutt Valley.

“The announcement of funding for three Hutt Valley projects will provide more economic growth and capacity for our local community. It recognises the excellent science produced in the Hutt by the likes of GNS Science and Callaghan Innovation,” Mr Bishop says.

The $14.1 million injection will result in three research projects delivered by GNS Science: $9.6m for energy and minerals research in New Zealand basins; $3m for environmental research on smart models for aquifer management; and $1.5m for hazards research on infrastructure-critical slopes. The three proposals were selected from a list of 157 proposals by the Science Board, an independent statutory board, following robust review by independent experts.

“The success of these proposals further demonstrates the ability and potential of organisations based in the Hutt Valley. It is part of an overall commitment by this Government to invest in projects which help boost New Zealand’s productivity and competitiveness,” Mr Bishop says.
