Ethnic Communities Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga and thousands of people were among guests at the Festival of India in Manukau today where Bollywood action hero Sunil Shetty was the star attraction.
“The Indian community is one of the five largest ethnic groups in New Zealand and this annual festival attracts up to 20,000 people each year,” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.
“Our Indian community is incredibly important to New Zealand’s rich cultural diversity and events such as this festival offer an opportunity for community engagement with other ethnic groups.
“It was a great coup to have an actor as famous as Sunil Shetty to headline the festivities. It is probably fair to say that Indian movie stars, as well as their cricketing heroes, enjoy the kind of recognition and adulation we save for our All Blacks.”
