Parliament passes Green Party’s original Bill

The Green Party is pleased that its original Bill to include the Red Peak design as an option in the upcoming flag referendum has passed after being adopted by the Government.

“There was a genuine groundswell of support for a Red Peak alternative in the upcoming referendum, so I put this Bill up to ensure New Zealanders had the choice to vote for it,” said Green Party MP Gareth Hughes.

“We are pleased the Bill has now passed after being adopted by the Government.

“We are also proud that the Green Party was able to provide a pathway through the political gridlock and give many New Zealanders broader choice.

“While we still believe there are much more important issues like climate change and inequality that require attention, and the referendum has its flaws, it was going to happen regardless, so we wanted to help make the best of a bad situation.

“The Greens have many more constructive solutions available on other issues and would welcome working with all parties to deliver good outcomes for Kiwis,” said Mr Hughes.
