Power outage a huge question mark

Rt Hon Winston Peters
Member of Parliament for Northland
New Zealand First Leader

9 OCTOBER 2015

POWER OUTAGE A HUGE QUESTION MARK OVER INFRASTRUCTURAL INVESTMENT

Today’s massive Northland power outage raises serious questions as to whether Northland has had its share of infrastructure investment.

“The economic cost of the failure at the Ngawha substation, causing power cuts to over 30,000 homes and businesses, is phenomenal - it’s recurring trouble Northland can ill afford,” says New Zealand First Leader and Member of Parliament for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.

“In the year 2015, when we are so reliant on electricity, it is telling to hear a major supermarket operator saying they have a generator on standby because they’re in Northland which ‘doesn’t have the best power system in the country’.

“It is long since time for the government to swing in behind its ‘caring for the regions’ talk and get building the infrastructure needed. Decades of neglect cannot continue.

“Fix the infrastructure and businesses will establish and grow, jobs will be created and the Northland economy will be robust,” says Mr Peters.
